Strike Two

And so the lay offs begin. My work friend, dave, is getting laid off on friday because of the teamster strike. i feel bad for him because he just got this job in the end of march after being laid off for 11 months. he had some problems with his medical insurance from his old job after he got laid off and now he has thousands of dollars in medical bills he needs to pay. he is a really nice guy that has fallen on some hard times. i really hope this strike ends soon so he can come back to work.

i don't understand this strike. it seems petty to me. teamsters got paid around $34/hour PLUS benefits before the strike. they are of course asking for more money. they are also asking that a non-working foreman and a non-working assistant foreman be on site (in company trucks) whenever there are more than 10 trucks on a job. the smaller contractors are kinda okay with this because they will never have more than 10 trucks on a job but the big contractors might and they are not willing to pay for two NON-working foremen on site.

i read a news article today that said that several of the teamsters are confused as to why they are even on strike. the original vote to strike was 200 to 34 (in favor of the strike). the article stated that some of the teamsters now feel that they were lied to during the meeting where they voted to strike.

i think the whole this is very frustrating and annoying. it is really starting to bother me now that people that have nothing to do with the union are getting laid off.

Strike

Day five of the teamster strike. Well, it is workday number five. It can end any time now....

Since the teamsters (truck drivers) are on strike, other unions are honoring the strike and not working but not picketting. This means all of the contractors are shut down and thus, all of the roadway projects are standing still. and of course, if the contractor doesn't work, i don't work. i have been able to catch up on my paperwork last week and today but i am almost all the way caught up on that. it is just boring sitting in the office all day. i do have jeff and shawn to talk to at least which at least helps me get through the day. we are all sitting in the office, bored, waiting for the strike to end. the last i heard there is no end in sight yet.

matt's family is coming over this weekend to see our house. we are going to have a cook out for father's day on sunday. matt is going to make juicy lucys on the grill. we had them on saturday and they were so good. we used a different kind of cheese this time and it made all the difference. i'm looking forward to having another one :)

Lilly

I forgot I had this journal...I don't remember why I started it but I might as well write in it now I guess :)

I adopted a new puppy a few weeks ago. Her name is Lilly. She is a lab/pitt mix. She is a little over three months old. I am going to train her to be a therapy dog. Not a seeing eye dog but a dog that kids can read to or take her to nursing homes to visit with the residents or to a hospital to lift patients spirits. When I was in the hospital for jaw surgery a few years ago a dog came to visit me and I thought it was the best thing ever. I hate hospitals, especially staying the night there and the visit from the dog was a welcome surprise.

I haven't started any formal training with Lilly yet but she knows her name and how to sit already. She will sit for a treat and for me to throw her ball. She is about 90% house broken, too. I'm really excited to start training with her.
